Visual Culture of the Pandemic

Winter 2021 was a challenging year. Classes were held online. Outside, Ontario went through waves and shutdowns. ENG 705’s final assignment was designed to tackle the visual culture of the pandemic. The goal was less to understand the pandemic than to appreciate what viral images tell us about it.

Students have created a remarkable record of this moment in history using traditional scholarly research methods as well as research-praxis.

We tried to disrupt the pandemic, using glitch techniques.

Care was a starting point. We then sought to see what encodes it both socially and materially:
